Dolls Get Dramatic "Makeunders" No Longer Look Like Porn Stars

There has always been a debate around how 'realistic' Barbie's proportions are, and if she was a real person, if she would even be able to stand up. One one level I can appreciate that people were concerned that kids might be all kinds of f*cked up playing with dolls that represented hyper unrealistic beauty standards. At the same time a little voice of reason in the back of my head always responded to these arguments with something like: relax, it's just a doll.  The doll controversy is back, but this time Australian artist Sonia Singh has given the once popular line of Bratz dolls a dramatic "make under" for her project called Tree Change Dolls. She took what the Barbie hating crowd consider "over-sexualized" dolls and scrapped off the excessive makeup and the Go-Go dancer outfits for a more "down-to-earth" look. Singh then repainted the dolls' faces, created new shoes, and stitched together new clothes to transform the Bratz into her perception of what little girls actually look like. Why are we giving our little girl girls (and boys) dolls that look like they just stepped off of an Adult film set? How did this become a thing?
