The Double Standards Women Face From a Comic

Katarzyna Babis is a 20 year-old cartoonist.  She's come up with one of the most compelling ways to talk about the double standard women face every day in our culture about the way they dress or the life choices that they make.  For her feminism means allowing women to make choices they wish without the risk of judgement or censure.  The comic showcases six women in six different positions in life, the choices they have made, and they received incredibly hypocritical criticism about those choices. "[I wanted to start a] discussion about the problem with the way women are perceived by the society, about huge and often contradictory expectations that are put on their shoulders," Babis told the Huffington Post in an email. "In this reality, a woman’s body doesn’t belong to her –- it is either a public property, intended only to be admired, or a source of sin, shame and guilt.  I would like to take away the bad rep of the word 'feminism,' broaden the awareness of the actual agenda of this movement, and of the need for discussion about the way in which women are treated in our society," Babis told HuffPost. The comic is a great start for that.  She states that feminism isn't about burning bras or hating men or even trying to emulate them.  The comic emulates the "no win" that women are faced with no matter the life path that they choose...there never seems to be a 'right one.'  And unfortunately it's true.  Mothers are facing this more and more as the culture hits back snidely against women who work "too" much outside of the home and don't have unlimited time for their children.  Yet stay at home moms who decide to raise their children are criticized for having no ambition and being too lazy to contribute to the family finances.   original-e1387638667914   Do you follow us on Instagram?
