In the 2014 ESPN “body issue” a variety of professional athletes strip down for some provocative and evocative sports photography. On the ESPN website you can see the gallery of nude shots, plus a blurb about the athlete: age, who they are, body stats, and a few quotes about their given sport or experiences. With over 20 featured athletes, including: Venus Williams, Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Phelps, Amy Purdy, Nigel Sylvester, Angel McCoughtry, and many more, this photo series highlights the talents from all kinds of sports arenas, from football to motosports. What I love about all of these photos is how well they showcase the athletes’ skill. This is not merely a “sex sells, so let’s strip down some rocking bods” kind of shoot (although who are we kidding, sex does sell). In every image the athletes are featured either with their sports equipment or mid action, whether it’s swimming, jumping, dunking, running, or pushing a bobsled. You can truly see the power within their bodies and physique. Yes, they are naked. But are they sexualized? Not really. What do you think?
