Food Philosophies: The Paleo Diet

The Paleo or Primal Diet is basically aimed at eating food that cavemen would have eaten, before the advent of processed or packaged foods and before the agricultural revolution. It revolves around the belief that eating natural foods is the best way to remain healthy since we would be genetically predisposed to thrive on that type of food. If you can hunt it or gather it, it’s probably included in the diet. Foods Included: meat (preferably grass-fed), fish, vegetables, wild fruits, eggs, nuts, and small amounts of healthy oils. Foods Excluded: refined sugars, cereals, fruit juices, grains, starches, alcohol, legumes, and dairy paleo Possible Benefits:
  • Weight loss
  • Naturally gluten-free
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Reduced inflammation
  • Rich in fibre
  • Increased energy
  • More likely to feel fuller
  • Improve or eliminate acne
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Reduced risk of heart disease and diabetes
Drawbacks:
  • Possible lack of calcium and Vitamin D
  • Meat is far more fatty than in ancient times
  • Limited food choices
  • May be difficult for vegetarians and vegans
  • Must be sure to balance any nutrients you take away from your diet
