Food Villains #1: Restaurant Desserts

"NOOOOOO!" I can hear many people screaming. "Not our desserts!" Yes, sadly desserts are on the list of food villains, particularly the desserts served at many restaurants. From fried ice cream to ice cream sundaes to delectable chocolate brownies to apple pies to fruit turnovers, there's nothing that closes the meal as well as a dessert. Unfortunately, these desserts tend to be VERY high in calories. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="576"] Source: justdessertsnyc.com[/caption] Consider what's in a dessert: iced cream, baked pastries, deep fried goodies, and chocolate sauce. There are desserts with fruit, but truth be told, few people actually order them. Take a look at this classic sundae served at Uno Chicago Grill, the Mega-Sized Deep Dish Sundae:
  • 2,800 calories
  • 136 grams of fat
  • 380 grams of carbs
  • 1,240 milligrams of sodium
This is meant to share between two people, and after a heavy meal? God save us all from our rapidly expanding midsections! My advice: Close with fruit or parfait. (Yoghurt and/or fruit gives you all the sweet you want, but without too many more calories.)
