Food Villains #14: Wraps

Most people think that wraps are the healthy alternative to a sandwich, but rarely is that the case! A hearty sandwich is often served on white bread, which offers far too many calories for a conscientious eater. A tortilla wrap, on the other hand, is usually served in a white flour tortilla, which is made with about 1/3rd the calories of a big sandwich. However, just because the starch is lower in calories, that doesn't mean the fillings are! [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Source:[/caption] Let's look at the Applebees Chicken Fajita Rollup. This delicious wrap packs a whopping:
  • 1,430 calories
  • 76 grams of fat
  • 3,780 milligrams of sodium
W-T-H? The wrap is loaded with deep fried chicken tenders, cheese, and a few token veggies. A ranch-like "salsa" is squirted generously into the tortilla, adding far more calories than the mayo you'd get on a burger. There are healthy wraps, but most of them are just another way to get far too many calories. My advice: Make it a salad! (Enjoy the crispy chicken and cheese, but sans white flour bread/tortillas.)
