Food Villains #21: Colorless Kids Combo Meals

You've seen these meals in just about every fast food joint in the country, but even restaurants are guilty of serving your kids meals that are all one color. The pale golden brown of French fries, chicken nuggets, fish sticks, mozzarella sticks, and many other supremely unhealthy foods fill your kids' plates. Sure, these foods may be the only thing the little tyke wants to eat, but what are you giving him or her to put in their bodies? [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="550"] Source: www.maxarabia.com[/caption] An example is the Uno Chicago Grill Kids Kombo meal, complete with French Fries. It's loaded with:
  • 800 calories
  • 1,560 milligrams of sodium (80 to 90% of DV)
  • 49 grams of total fat
  • 9 grams of saturated fat
Not only is this meal almost completely DEVOID of nutrients, but it's packed with calories--far more than your child needs in a single meal. When they dump ketchup all over the food, you add more calories without adding more nutrients. It's a child's health nightmare! My advice: Color is ALWAYS best. (Veggies, fruits, red meat, white fish, pink chicken breast--ANYTHING to add color. Color = nutrients)
