Four Sisters Age 40 Years in Photos
The Brown sisters have posed for a portrait every year since 1975. In this incredible series of photographs spanning 40 years, you can see the passage of time echoed over the features of these four sisters as they pass from youth, through middle age. The series, which has been shown in exhibitions around the world will be on display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, coinciding with the publishing of a book “The Brown Sisters: Forty Years” that will be released by the Museum in November.

What is so profound about the series is the different body language evident at each stage of their lives. It is rare for us to see the passage from this perspective - we seldom notice the year by year aging of our own features in the mirror, and it often takes looking back at a forgotten photograph of ourselves for us to see times effect on our bodies. Change in life is a constant, but the changes that are at work in our bodies as we train, lose weight, build muscle and age seem to show up all at once.

Photographs like the these are that rare kind of Art that brings our common fate as humans into crystal clear relief. We are all destined to age. Gravity is pulling on all of our features, and ultimately each of us will someday confront our “old selves” in the mirror. How comfortable are you with this change?

For me it’s just another reason to keep fit and active. Not because I’m under any delusion about escaping the aging process, but because I want to enjoy my body and as much of this physical experience of life on earth as possible. It’s really a 'use it or lose it' mentality, with the peaceful knowing that in the end everything about our physicality is surrendered to time. When you look at aging from this vantage point, it’s really never too late to choose a path that allows us to be the best version of ourselves as possible. Lets enjoy the ride together for as long as possible.
