Let’s face it. Some kids won’t sit through an entire yoga class. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t still bring yoga into their lives! Yoga has allowed me to introduce some ways for my kids to move their bodies that actually calms them down. And by practicing alongside them, they see that I am "just like them" and enjoying what they are doing instead of forcing them into it, making them more willing to practice later. I’m always in awe when I see my kids pulling out the mat to practice different poses or to try a sun salutation without being asked. Make it a game and they will want to keep playing all day long :) Yoga will not only get them flexible and playful, it will teach them mindfulness, how to listen to their body, as well as where their bodies are located in the space around them. It can be a chance to show them that it’s not about perfection, but about effort, having fun, getting in touch with your body and discovering who you really are. Some fun poses that my kids love to do with me (and I’m sure yours will, too!) are: Upward facing dog or cobra Tree Telephone Warrior Butterfly legs Downward facing dog Give them a shot yourself and see if your kids will join you. See how your kids feel after some play. See how YOU feel. Perhaps this can be the start of a beautiful journey together.
