Guy's Style Guide: 9 Accessories You Can't Live Without

October 07, 2013 3 min read

Accessories are the gems of any wardrobe, sometimes literally. It is important to have accessories that can pack a punch and add personality to your basic pieces. Here are 9 accessories you can't live without.   1. Briefcase A man needs a briefcase. Whether you are a corporate employee, a creative, a CEO, or a student, you can benefit from having one. They are practical: You can carry all your papers, your laptop, tablet, e-reader, headphones, phone, USB, and any other gadget you have, in it. They are stylish too. If you don't have one already, put it on your Essentials List and search for the one that complements your lifestyle, your personal style, and your budget.

2. Socks

Socks are necessary for most people. You could rock no socks, but I think most men still prefer them. So, you might as well have some fun here.

Choose socks that coordinate with your ensemble when pairing them with your look, especially when you are dressing for a formal affair or need to keep it professional.

3. Ties

Ties are a staple accessory, even if you only own one. They look great with collared button ups, with or without a jacket, and of course, they are pretty standard with a suit. Look for quality when you purchase your ties. Silk, wool, and linen are nice choices (although linen should only be worn in the warmer months).

4. Tie Bar

There are a lot of tie bar options out there from sleek and plain to fancy to edgy. Choose one that reflects your personal style. The one pictured here has a sophisticated mother of pearl inlay.

5. Pocket Squares

Mixing and matching ties and pocket square is an easy (and fun!) way to add personality and extend your wardrobe. When selecting yours, focus on quality. Silk, wool, cotton, and linen are nice, although again, linen should only be worn during the warmer months. If you are just beginning to build your collection, choose pocket squares in the same color family as your ties(s). Then, branch out from there by adding coordinating and contrasting colors that complement your wardrobe.

6. Scarf

If you live in a cold climate, you need a scarf to layer on and keep you warm. This is another opportunity to add some color and personality, but I suggest you choose a high quality cashmere scarf in a neutral color that complements your wardrobe, first.

7. Sunglasses

Even during the fall and winter months, and especially if you live in a climate where it snows, you need to protect your peepers with sunglasses. And, while you are at it, there is no harm in doing it with style. Here are a couple sunglasses that look good on lots of face shapes.

8. Watch

While watches can cost as much as a car (or more), there is no need to take out a loan in order to have an attractive timepiece.

These Timex watches are simple, classic, stylish, and affordable.

9. Signature Cologne

Scent is one of the biggest attractants (or repellents) - it is science. Olfactory response is really important, so it is just as important to make sure that you are smelling good. Real good.

Choosing a personal scent is just that, personal.

If you do not already have a signature scent, stop by the fragrance counter next time you are at your local mall or favorite department store.

Stop in, smell around, and select 1 or 2 scents to try out. You can usually get a small sample for free.

Try it out for a few days, ask those close to you how it smells on you, and if you (and those around you) like it, go get yourself some.

It is also a good idea to build a collection and switch out scents with the cooler or warmer weather.

Here are a couple that were well reviewed and rated as the top choices for men's cologne.

There you have it, 9 accessories you can't live without!

Are there any other items that on your must-have list?

I would love it if you would share them with me or give me some feedback on what you thought about this post!
