What Happens When You Recycle Trash and Get a Violin

January 23, 2014 1 min read

photo-main Its called the Landfill Harmonic.  A story about people transforming trash into music, about love, courage, and creativity. Cateura, Paraguay is a slum that is built quite literally on a landfill.  The people in the village sift through thousands of pounds of trash to find plastic and other object to recycle...to sell...this is how they survive. landfill-1 But the music that comes from the school...the sound of violins is not anything close to the beautiful woodwork of a Stravinsky violin.  Or even a violin bought cheaply in the United States.  Instead they are plastic or metal, lovingly put together to create a sound that is otherworldly...a song you wouldn't otherwise have in Cateura.  For a violin here is worth more than a house. What else are we throwing away without recognizing its full potential?
