Have You Been Holding Onto These Household Items for Too Long? Here's What You Should Replace Regularly
Each new month serves as a time to cleanse. We organize a little here, clean up a little there and go on with our days as per usual. And as the days go by, we try to track what's old and throw it out as needed, but we certainly don't toss what works, right? But did you know that there are some things you should be replacing more often than others?
1. Scratched nonstick pans
Be careful of scratched nonstick pans. The coating can come off while you're cooking and make way for harmful chemicals in your food.
2. Toothbrush
This one might surprise you. The American Dental Association suggests getting a new one every three to four months, otherwise you'll be subject to the buildup of bacteria.
3. Makeup
Avoid irritating your skin or even an infection by replacing your makeup often. Makeup should be replaced often, because if it's too old, it can irritate your skin or even cause infections. Follow these guidelines for when to replace what.
4. Contact lens case
Reduce your risk of infection by buying a new contact lens case every three months.
5. Kitchen sponge
A kitchen sponge is often a clean-all product, so you should really be careful about the longevity of this one. A University of Arizona study discovered that a kitchen sponge can actually be up to 200,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat! After each use, clean it by nuking it in the microwave or throwing it in the dishwasher.
6. Plastic tupperware
That Tupperware from 2010? Not such a good idea to keep using as many made before this year contain BPA, which is a hormone-disrupting chemical that leaks into food when the containers get heated or age.
Have you been keeping any of these items around for too long?
