Have You Heard of "Chick Shredding"?

Most people don't think twice about the eggs they eat in the morning. It is understandable, we are a culture who has a lot on our minds. But have you ever wondered where your eggs come from and how exactly the industry works? If the answer is no, you aren't alone. When you do look at the commercial egg industry, you will discover some very dark practices. Male chicks are not considered "commercially viable" when it comes to their meat and so they are disposed of in really terrible ways. They are often suffocated or ground up, while alive, shortly after hatching. But new technology has been developed that can identify the chicks as being male while in the egg, allowing them to be removed before hatching and therefore putting an end to what can only be described as a heartless act. Animal rights activists have been trying to call attention to these practices for some time and it seems their vigilance has paid off. chick-blending-large With this new technology, only female chicks will be allowed to hatch. Germany’s Agricultural Minister, Christian Schmidt, has advised that the process of ‘chick shredding’ be completely phased out by the year 2017. This makes Germany the first country in the world to ban the practice. The unfortunate reality is that chick shredding is very common and the egg industry isn't particularly motivated to change. What difference does it make to them? But kindness and compassion shouldn't just end with humans. What was once considered impossible by industry insiders is now not only possible but being implemented. Hopefully, the rest of the world will jump on board and our favourite protein source will become a lot more humane! What do you think of this development?
