Here's What Paleo Lovers Don't Know About the Diet

August 19, 2015 1 min read

The paleo diet has popped up everywhere, from a variety of articles to every social media platform out there. People post their recipes, their meals, their body transformations, and thoughts on how the diet has changed their lives. But, as with any diet fad out there, there is, of course, speculation about it. paleo diet The idea of the paleo diet is to go back to the land before time ... or at least the time when our primitive ancestors were noshing on high-protein meats and little to no carbohydrates. But it seems there's a little something missing from this idea. A study published in the Quarterly Review of Biology concluded that starch was a significant nutrient for humans back when our brains were growing rapidly and carbs were key to getting brain glucose and boost the metabolism. Glucose can be gathered from a variety of sources, but the most efficient source is carbs. "Eating meat may have kick-started the evolution of bigger brains, but cooked starchy foods together with more salivary amylase genes made us smarter still," the researchers of the study noted. So what does this mean for paleo lovers? Simply put, it is more of a diet choice than a lifestyle based off of exact history, as our ancestors didn't completely throw carbs to the side. What are your thoughts on these findings? Will it change your dedication to the paleo diet? Source: Cosmopolitan Do you follow us on Instagram?
