Hot Lemon Water: Why This Celeb Go-To Can Ruin Your Teeth

Gwenyth Paltrow swears by her morning glass of hot lemon water. It has also become a favourite health secret of Jennifer Aniston. Claudia Schiffer even endorses it's weight loss and digestive benefits. But there is a hidden detriment to this highly touted natural drink. Dentists are now warning that the acidity level yellows your teeth and erodes your enamel. Combining the acidic lemon with hot water is even more dangerous for oral health. lemon "The temperature of the water can exacerbate this effect because erosion is more severe at higher temperatures." says Dr. Nigel Carter, chief executive of the British Dental Health Foundation. "This can lead to discolouration as the darker dentine [the harder tooth matter below the enamel] starts to shine through the tooth." Dr. Nigel recommends avoiding this damage by drinking your lemon water through a straw so it doesn't come in direct contact with your teeth. He explains that this is the same suggestion he gives to soda drinkers, who also experience decay and discolouration. Drinking hot lemon water through a straw is a great way to continue getting the detoxifying, digestive and weight loss benefits of this beverage without putting your teeth at risk.
