Human Ken Doll Dies At 20
Celso Santebanes, or the second human Ken doll, has died of leukemia at age 20.
Santebanes was diagnosed last year and lost his battle after contracting pneumonia last week.
Of the three human Ken dolls, Santebanes was the most famous, even having a doll modeled after him -- a fact that tripped me out more than I care to admit. He even paired up with the human Barbie, Valeria Lukyanova.
Over the course of his too short life, Santebanes spent $50,000 on plastic surgeries for his nose, chin, and jaw in an attempt to replicate the famous Mattel doll.
His illness gave him a different perspective. In January, he told the NY Post that he is "no longer concerned with the issue of aesthetics." He went on to say, "for me that doesn’t matter. What matters is my health now, and I will fight for it."
He said that if he were to survive his illness, he was done with surgery claiming that these alterations were a way "to supplant this lack of … love, perhaps.”
Such young death is sad. I hope he felt loved before he passed.
