If You Want To Lose Weight, Try Matcha

Are you totally addicted to your cup of coffee or tea first thing in the morning? If so, it may be time to try something different. To kick it up a gear, if you will. Swap out your usual caffeine fix for matcha. Matcha is a form of steamed and dried green tea leaves that has a long history in Japanese tea ceremonies. David Mandelbaum and Jessica Lloyd, owners of matcha purveyor Panatea, describe it as the "healthy espresso of green tea." Just how healthy is it? One study found that one serving of matcha contains 137 times more disease fighting polyphenols -- called epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) -- than a conventionally brewed cup of China Green Tips. That is the equivalent of 10 cups of regular green tea!   Here's what matcha might be able to do for you: Weight-loss concentrate: EGCG has been shown in some studies to boost metabolism while other studies have shown EGCG may prevent the growth of new fat cells! More human studies still need to be done but we all know that sipping green tea is better for your weight loss than drinking sugary drinks, so a matcha-based drink may be an equally wise decision. Disease-fighter: Matcha has a high level of antioxidants. The catechins in green tea are known to have cancer preventing and immune boosting effects. They may even help high risk health workers avoid contracting the flu. Can you really go wrong? Daily detox: A study with rats with type 2 diabetes found that matcha had a protective effect on their liver and kidneys. Other studies have found that green tea drinkers have a 33% lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes by reducing blood glucose levels. The more tea, the lower the risk. Jitter-free energy: Matcha has less caffeine than espresso but the nutrient content provides more energy. Because they are protected from the sun before harvesting, the leaves used to produce matcha retain their chlorophyll which can boost energy. What do you think?
