I received this email from Sara in response to the scoliosis stories we've been posting.
This is hers
Hey fierce bodyrockers :)
Time for this Irish cailín to share her scoliosis strive for success story!
My name is Sara Mc Carthy and I am a successful 22year old full time self employed Neuromusclular Physical Therapist with a
double bending spine, twisted vertebrae, lordosis and protruding ribs.
Does it stop me? NO.
Does it limit me? NO.
Can I treat normally? Yes. I love what I do and I'm damn good at it too!
My personal scoliosis story begun when I was between the age of 9/10. I was an incredibly active child from doing competitive
gymnastics to swimming to horse riding to field sports such as camogie and tag rugby, I was constantly on the go!
I begun to notice my curve as the gymnastic leotards and normal swimsuits would fit me different to the "normal" girls..
one shoulder blade would stick out while the other was very stuck, one rib cage was all pointy, one side of my waist was a
funny shape, one hip was higher etc. Strangely I trucked on until the age of 17 before I went to the consultant
orthopedic surgeon in CUH to be diagnosed.
My latest MRI and XRAY (get them done every 6months to track the progress) shows a 43degree lumbar bend
and 21degree cervical curve. He wants to operate and place me in a brace afterward however I have refused,
the cons outweigh the pros for me personally. My attached photos show my achievements in the gym, I have
had to pack up all physical sports apart from horseriding. I adore the gym as it brings symmetry and balance
to my body, it helps bring strength and stability and it has developed me both physically and mentally!
I am an avid gym goer and bodyrocker, I refuse to set limitations, I refuse to give in to my physical
difference, I enjoy educating others about my scoliosis and making people more aware and knowledgeable,
I am me and I love me...I am unique and I embrace it :)
Live life, Love long, Laugh loud...you only have one chance to xx
