Internet Movement 'Thinner Beauty' Slims Down Plus-Size Women With Photoshop
First there was the grotesquely titled, 'Project Harpoon' - a Facebook page that took plus size celeb pictures and thinned them down. Now there is 'Thinner Beauty', which classifies itself as a movement.
Thinner Beauty has a less aggressive approach to 'teaching' women that they need to lose weight to be beautiful. By this method, the movement believes it is helping larger women realize that their size is unacceptable. One word: wow.
Thinner Beauty can be found on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram showing its Before and After pictures using Photoshop to digitally slenderize female bodies. #ThinnerBeauty is a hashtag that is gaining attention, and for all the wrong reasons.
This page hides behind the word 'movement', as to sound less menacing and more positive. It defends itself from revealing what it is, a fat-shaming social media campaign. While Thinner Beauty says it's trying to wake up women who are curvy and help them see what they could look like, it's damaging the self esteems of many as it gains momentum.
"We do this [encourage them] by showing how much more beautiful they could be if they made the difficult, lifelong commitment to a regimen of personal fitness." states Thinner Beauty.
This 'movement' stands behind none of the principles that personal fitness advocates. What are your thoughts on this body-shaming trend?
