Is Coconut Water Actually Causing You to Gain Weight?

People have been going coocoo for coconuts for quite some time now. Whether it be coconut oil, coconut milk or coconut water, it's become a favourite amongst foodies, athletes and celebrities alike. Coconut water in particular has been touted as a healthy beverage to consume. Coconut water is made from young coconuts and comes complete with a plethora of nutrients including potassium, magnesium, sodium, manganese, zinc, selenium and iodine as well as B-vitamins. Coconut water is wonderful, but it still has calories, so drink up in moderation. People claim that coconut water helps to achieve healthier skin, cures hangover, aids in digestion, promotes hydration and is even linked to weight loss. Though these may have you running to the store to purchase your own carton of the good stuff, perhaps you should think again. Coconut water is naturally sweet, making it an appealing beverage due to its taste alone. The natural stuff is low in fat as well as calories, making it a great alternative to typical sugary drinks that are often in our faces. It actually has 50 percent fewer calories than Coca-Cola, and has no additives as well. However, could coconut water actually be making you fat? Well, something to take into consideration is that it does, in fact, contain calories, so it shouldn't be treated as water per say. Having just a serving won't affect you too much, with 58 kcal in 250 mL, but drinking a ton of it will have the calories adding up quickly. The nutrients in this beverage are found in many other things as well, so you don't have to feel like coconut water is your one and only option for getting your health fix. But with this said, coconut water is definitely a great item to take advantage of, as long as you do so in moderation. Try out this healthy green smoothie, for instance: 1 cup of coconut water 1 green apple (with the core taken out) 1 squeezed lime 2 handfuls of baby spinach 1 small handful of mint leaves 1 cucumber Just blend all the ingredients up and serve! Do you drink coconut water regularly?
