Is Tomato Juice The New Red Wine?

We all know that red wine contains cancer-fighting, stress-reducing, Alzheimer's-preventing properties but its days may be numbered as the one and only red drink to offer these benefits. Tomato juice may be joining the ranks before long. Scientists from the John Innes Centre in the United Kingdom have developed a genetically modified tomato that is full of resveratrol, the antioxidant that gives red wine its nutritional powers. The researchers have actually been able to grow a tomato that has as much resveratrol as 50 bottles of red wine! In a study found in Nature Communications, researchers were able to modify tomatoes to produce larger quantities of genistein, the cancer-fighting compound in soy beans. In fact, these tomatoes had as much genistein as 2.5kgs of tofu. tomato-juice And don't forget that tomatoes are already loaded with beneficial nutrients like lycopene,  vitamins A, C, and K, folic acid, copper, potassium, beta-carotene, lutein, and biotin. So, how did scientists manage to alter the tomatoes? Adding certain protein enzymes to the fruit boosts the levels of phenylpropanoids and flavonoids (two types of antioxidants) and triggers the production of disease-fighting compounds like resveratrol and genistein. The researchers have pointed out that this same process can be used to infuse tomatoes with other beneficial compounds that can not only be good for us while we eat the fruit but can also be extracted for medical use. But do we really need souped up tomatoes? “Medicinal plants with high value are often difficult to grow and manage, and need very long cultivation times to produce the desired compounds. Our research provides a fantastic platform to quickly produce these valuable medicinal compounds in tomatoes,” said study co-author Yang Zhang, Ph.D. These compounds can be easily purified from the juice and made into life-saving medicine. Amazing. What do you think of this research? Crazy exciting or are you feeling a little nervous about modified foods? Source: Shape
