Jennifer Lawrence: "Hollywood Can't Body-Shame Me, But I'm Lucky"
Jennifer Lawrence has always been an advocate for keeping things real. She recently took a stab at Hollywood body standards!
“I had a conversation with somebody about the struggles with weight in the industry—I know that’s something I talk nonstop about,” Lawrence explained to Time. “And they were saying, ‘All of the main movie stars aren’t very underweight.’ I said, ‘Yeah, because once you get to a certain place, people will hire you. They just want you to be in the movie, so they don’t care.’”
This honest observation rings very true. A lot of young stars are feeling the pressure to achieve a point where they can relax a little about their weight. But this can be a dangerous and damaging time for them. It can also have an impact on their fans - young women who want emulate them.
When Jennifer herself was starting out, she was under immense pressure to lose pounds in order to gain roles in movies.
“Somebody told me I was fat, that I was going to get fired if I didn’t lose a certain amount of weight,” she explained. “They brought in pictures of me where I was basically naked, and told me to use them as motivation for my diet.”
Now that she is at a more comfortable point in her career, the pressure is lessened. But it is hard to shake off those former criticisms.
