Lululemon Athletica announced a partnership with the Dalai Lama Centre for Peace and Education, resulting in donations from the yoga-attire company of $75,000 over the next 3 years. Some people are skeptical of the Lululemon/Dalai Lama partnership, or, as it would be known if they were a Hollywood couple, the Dalai Lamalemon. Commenters have accused Lululemon of using the Dalai Lama’s good name as a marketing ploy, and there’s been a general backlash against the company since the announcement. As far as PR fiascos go, between fat-shaming their customers, selling see-through pants, hunting down ebay resellers, and donating to a nonprofit charity, I’d say the latter is a real step up. Whether it’s penance for past PR scandals, or a bid to bolster their reputation by using the name of the Dalai Lama, a $75,000 donation to a charity that expands education initiatives on the mind-body connection, and is all about empowering communities and developing compassion is a good thing in my books.
