How to Make a Protein Shake Without Protein Powder

March 14, 2014 3 min read

I'm not a fan of protein powder supplements, but I do love a good protein shake. So, how do I get a shake with lots a protein and none of the added artificial ingredients normally found in protein supplements? It's actually quite simple, and the ingredient is something that your grandmother would recognize. protein powder Before I get to the recipe, let me talk a little bit about why I'm not a fan of protein powders. Mainly it's because the ingredients list is as long as my arm including chemicals and artificial flavors to hide those chemicals, and looks a little something like this:   GNC SuperFoods Spiru-Meal™ - Vanilla Ingredients:  Non-GMO Protein Blend (Soy Protein Isolate, Brown Rice Protein, Pea Protein), Non-GMO Protein Blend (Soy Protein Isolate, Brown Rice Protein, Pea Protein), Crystalline Fructose, Crystalline Fructose, SuperFoods Vitamin and Mineral Blend (Tricalcium Phosphate, Dimagnesium Phosphate, Calcium Lactate, Ascorbic Acid, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium D-Pantothenate, Pyridoxine HCl, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Vitamin A, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Chromium Chloride, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3, Vitamin B-12), SuperFoods Vitamin and Mineral Blend (Tricalcium Phosphate, Dimagnesium Phosphate, Calcium Lactate, Ascorbic Acid, Zinc Sulfate, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Ferric Pyrophosphate, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium D-Pantothenate, Pyridoxine HCl, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Vitamin A, Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Potassium Iodide, Chromium Chloride, Sodium Molybdate, Sodium Selenite, Vitamin D-3, Vitamin B-12), Natural Flavors, Natural Flavors, Cellulose Powder, Cellulose Powder, Xanthan Gum, Xanthan Gum, Lecithin, Lecithin, Salt, Salt, Apple Pectin, Apple Pectin, Natural Vanillin, Natural Vanillin, Reb A (Natural Stevia Leaf Sweetener), Reb A (Natural Stevia Leaf Sweetener), Choline (as Choline Bitartrate), Choline (as Choline Bitartrate), Inositol, Inositol, Oat Bran, Oat Bran, Bee Pollen, Bee Pollen, Enzyme Blend (Lipase, Cellulase, Papain, Bromelain), Enzyme Blend (Lipase, Cellulase, Papain, Bromelain), Spirulina, Spirulina, Chlorophyllin, Chlorophyllin The protein ingredient I use in my shakes has one simple ingredient... gelatin. That's right, the same gelatin your grandmother used to use to make jello, the same gelatin your mother used to drink to make her hair and nails strong, and the same gelatin found in joint care supplements. That gelatin. Crazy right? It's been in front of your face this whole time and you didn't even know it! When using gelatin in your protein shake, you're going to want to be sure to get a cold water soluble brand. It's called collagen hydrolysate and can mix into both hot and cold drinks without turning clumpy and it is absolutely tasteless, so there's no need for any artificial flavorings. To make sure you're getting the highest quality gelatin, you're also going to want to buy a brand that is from grass fed cows. The one I use is Great Lakes Collagen Hydrolysate. Just 4 tablespoons of gelatin gives you 26 grams of protein which is the same amount as most protein powders. Also, those 4 tablespoons are only 100 calories which is also about the same or less as most protein powders. Here's a recipe to get you started. Really, the ingredients you use are only limited by your imagination since gelatin has no flavor. As a matter of fact, you don't even need to limit yourself to protein shakes, I make protein coffee, tea, and even water to make sure I'm getting in my protein throughout the day!

Protein Shake Recipe

  • 1 cup blueberries
  • 1 banana
  • 1 cup coconut water
  • 4 tablespoons Great Lakes Gelatin
  • 7 ice cubes
Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth and frosty. If you want to know how I get a nice smooth protein shake, here's my secret:
  1. I put my ice cubes in first and get them all chopped up
  2. Then I add my fruit and blend until smooth
  3. Next, I add my coconut water and gelatin and blend until everything is combined and frothy

Shipping & Delivery

Due to COVID-19, shipping systems the world over are experiencing abnormal delays. There is an enormous demand on postal and delivery services as online shopping has skyrocketed, due to store closures and stay-at-home mandates. This is an unprecedented situation, and we are working around the clock to fulfill your orders as quickly as possible. To be clear, we are filling orders in 2-3 days, and we are shipping immediately after that. Once shipped, our shipping partner, UPS, will get your order out to you as quickly as possible. Thanks for your support and understanding.

Are you in Canada? Specifically, are you outside of a metropolitan centre? We need to alert you to a disruption in shipping due to COVID-19. Our preferred shipping provider, UPS, has informed us that they cannot guarantee express shipping for many locations. We have also seen that packages delivered to Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver, etc, are not waylaid, but packages delivered to areas just outside of these cities are being held in transit for days or even weeks. UPS has discontinued their guarantee of 1-4 day delivery, which you can read more about here. Therefore, we can guarantee early fulfillment but not early delivery of our goods from our warehouse to your door at this time.

We want you to start your fitness journey with us as quickly as possible, that’s why we send every package to the USA & Canada via expedited or standard shipping with our partners at UPS. Once your order is received and processed, it typically takes 2-4 days to get to you once it leaves our warehouse. That’s our commitment and we stand by it.

We ship within Canada and the United States via UPS with Standard & Expedited shipping (whichever is faster)

For locations outside of the US and Canada, we ship using FedEx International (EUROPE and Other Nations), which is usually in transit for 7-10 business days, depending on location.

We ship all of our physical products with UPS, from our warehouse location in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. Delays caused due to custom withholds are not included in these estimated delivery times.

To request a refund on physical product purchases, please contact us.
