Models: Combat Hunger with Orange Juice Cotton Balls

July 07, 2013 2 min read

Most of us know that many models struggle to stay thin to meet the demands of the fashion industry, and while the ‘thin-is-in’ mantra is changing, it may not be changing soon enough for some aspiring and established models.

Bria Murphy, daughter of comedian and actor Eddie Murphy, is an already an actor and a model and she aspires to be a Victoria's Secret model. In a recent interview, she revealed how some models resort to extreme measures to maintain their uber slim figures.

She told Good Morning America that she's, "heard of people eating the cotton balls with the orange juice...they dip it in the orange juice and then they eat the cotton balls to help them feel full. The cotton's not doing anything. It's just dissolving. And it makes you think you're full, but you're not." She continued, "It's a lot of pressure to be perfect. Lots of girls get addicted to drug and anorexia."

The truth is a diet of cotton balls IS dangerous. The cotton balls are not "just dissolving". Stomach acid may break them down, but they do not just miraculously disappear. There's a chance they may not even pass through your system entirely. They could settle and other 'stuff' could settle around it, causing infection - especially if you ingest cotton balls on a regular basis. Think serious backlog via bowel obstruction. Symptoms include vomiting, bloating, constipation and lack of gas if the intestine is completely blocked, and diarrhea if the intestine is partially blocked.

Yes, sometimes people eat things they shouldn't - on purpose or inadvertently. Swallowing a cotton ball or two won't necessarily cause gastrointestinal distress, but ingesting cotton balls on a regular basis could cause havoc to your body. In fact, chronic consumption of cotton balls could be life threatening if it isn’t treated. Even if an obstruction is caught before it kills you, the way to treat it is incredibly invasive and requires bowel resectioning. This means the blocked part of your GI tract is removed and then the bowels are diverted to a bag on the outside of your body.

These dangerous implications don’t even mention the malnutrition caused by this one-dimensional diet. All in all, the short-term ‘pay-off’ and long term negative side effects of this diet tactic put eating cotton balls right up there with other dangerous diet fads like tapeworms.
