Chocolate is a great brain food, in more ways than one! As we saw in the last article, it can help to increase the flow of blood to your brain, but now you'll see how it can actually protect your brain from strokes. First off, chocolate is great for protecting your blood vessels from cholesterol. It can raise good cholesterol levels, lower bad cholesterol levels, and even stop the bad cholesterol from clinging your arterial walls. By reducing cholesterol, you lower your stroke risk dramatically. Chocolate contains epicatechin, an antioxidant that will reduce the damage done to your brain by an ischemic stroke. Thanks to the chocolate, the signals sent between the various parts of your brain will be increased even after the brain is damaged by a stroke. Plus, chocolate increases the flow of blood to your brain, further reducing stroke risk!
