New Disease More Dangerous Than HIV: What You Need To Know
Believed to be more deadly than AIDS, this common virus is threatening the lives of many and it's only getting stronger. HPV or the Human Papilloma Virus is predicted to be the strongest epidemic we will face in this generation. So what exactly is this disease, and how is it transmitted?
HPV describes a group of viruses that has over 100 strains in America alone. The viruses are attracted to the moist areas of your body, including your mouth, throat, cervix and anus. They are transmitted by skin to skin genital contact. Condoms can help stop the spread of the disease, but they are not 100% effective. HPV typically does not show signs or symptoms, so it isn't easy to spot when you have contracted it. The virus can lay dormant in your system for years before presenting itself in a deadly way.
Untreated cases of HPV can result in cervical cancer, with 70% of all cervical cancers being linked to the virus. This type of cancer is one of the number one killers for women, and can be very aggressive. This is why HPV is especially dangerous for women. Genital warts, throat cancer and vaginal cancer can also occur in women with HPV.
Getting vaccinated against HPV is the most effective course of action for women. It is best to receive the vaccine at a young age, prior to becoming sexually active but anyone can receive one. The HPV vaccine protects against the most life-threatening strains of the virus.
