New Study Determines The Best Age To Get Married

Getting married can be a pressure filled situation. So can trying to decide to get married. So can wanting to get married... Now science may be making it even worse. University of Utah psychologist Nicholas H. Wolfinger conducted a study that found that those who marry in their mid 30's or later are more likely to get divorced than those who marry in their late 20's. Wolfinger found that before age 32, odds of divorce decrease by 11% with each additional year at time of marriage. This means, if you marry at age 29 instead of age 28, your divorce odds go down by 11%. But after 32, the odds of divorce increase by 5% with each year. For years data has suggested the opposite to be true which means these findings are likely to shock people. "But what was true for decades no longer seems to be the case," Wolfinger writes, noting that the result stood up to his controls for social factors, including race, education and socioeconomic background. It is not clear what has caused this trend but Wolfinger offers a few possible explanations. "Does the experience of staying unmarried well past the age of 30 somehow make people unfit for a lasting marriage?" he writes. "It's possible to envision a scenario where this might be the case, particularly in the form of a complicated relationship history. If you've had many boyfriends or girlfriends, your exes might play havoc with your marriage." These are interesting findings but don't freak just yet. There are likely a great deal of reasons for this and it doesn't have to be true for you. Maybe people in their 30s are less likely to stay in an unhappy marriage. Who knows? I'm sure we all know people who exhibit the exact opposite of these findings. All I know, at 34, I can use these findings to justify my single life the next time I get grilled at a family function. What do you think of this study? Why do you think these numbers play out as they do? Source: People Do you follow us on Instagram?
