New Trend Alert: Treadmill Studios

April 03, 2015 2 min read

New Trend Alert! A lot of people hate the treadmill; they would rather use any other piece of equipment in the gym than run on the treadmill. The treadmill can be intimidating and hard work but can also work on your endurance, speed and elevate your cardio level. The first gym/at home treadmill was invented in the 60’s and since that time treadmills have been used religiously by some and ignored by others. Treadmills hit their peak in the 80’s when jogging became the rage, but now in 2015 with so many new and different workouts’ sometimes people forget running for 30 minutes on the treadmill can be one of the hardest workouts in the gym. Not everyone forgot about the treadmill, treadmills are having a resurgence, treadmill studios are becoming a hot new trend in 2015. What is a treadmill studio? Much like a spinning studio is only for spin classes a treadmill studio is for treadmills. The treadmills are all lined up and you attend a group treadmill class just like you would spin, Pilates, yoga, etc. The group treadmill classes are high-intensity and involve interval training. Treadmill studios are popping up all over the country and even gym’s like Equinox are joining this new trend by setting up group treadmill classes at their gyms. David Siik an Equinox trainer says “My life is about getting people to stop hating the treadmill and to make friends with it.” What to expect from a group treadmill class: -The typical group treadmill class is 30 to 45 minutes. -The class starts by warming up by jogging on the treadmill for a few minutes. Next up you start running 2.0 mph (miles per hour) less than your end goal (ex. 5.0 if your fastest pace is 7.0) after 90 seconds keep the speed the same but add a 5% incline and run for another 90 seconds. Next increase your speed by .0.5mph (ex. 5.0 to 5.5) and take the incline back down to 0% and run for 60 seconds. The following 60 seconds keep the speed the same and increase the incline again to 5%. -The workout continues like that until you hit your max speed and then you have a few minutes of recovery before you start another segment similar to the one listed above. Running on the treadmill makes me feel as though I am getting an amazing workout, I always feel like I worked out hard when I run on the treadmill. After reading about treadmill studios and group treadmill classes I can’t wait to go to one of the classes because it sounds difficult but fun at the same time.
