Cloves are one of the oldest toothache remedies in the world. The spice has been used by Ayurvedic healers for centuries, thanks to its antibacterial and analgesic properties. Clove oil is the more effective option, but even their natural state, cloves are effective as a painkiller! It contains eugenol, a compound that gives it its flavor and scent, and which helps to numb the pain.
In one study conducted in 2006, clove oil helped to dull the pain as effectively as benzocaine, the prescription medication usually recommended for treating toothaches. If the oil is too strong for you to handle, simply place the clove next to your tooth and hold it there with your gum. Your saliva will break down the clove and release the pain-killing oil!
