Pain-Killing Foods #3: Coffee

As if you needed another excuse to have that cup of coffee in the morning! Coffee is one of the best sources of caffeine, a stimulant that has been linked to an increase in pain. Caffeine increases tension in your muscles, including the various involuntary muscles in your internal organs. Getting off caffeine is recommended for those with chronic pain, as caffeine can also increase sensitivity to pain. However, coffee offers short-term pain relief, making it a good option to drink if you have sore muscles the day after a workout. [caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="548"] Source: www.iwcstockholm.se[/caption] A study conducted in London found that drinking coffee increased women's tolerance to pain (the pain of ice-cold water). It was reasoned that the increase in blood pressure caused by the caffeine allowed them to tolerate pain more effectively, so it may help to reduce the pain of a leg-waxing, laser hair removal session, or epilating. Drinking coffee while taking paracetamol may also help to reduce the pain of headaches. In fact, a study is combining paracetamol with 65 milligrams of caffeine (the amount found in a cup of coffee) to see if it can truly reduce headache pain by 10%, as research suggests.
