Periods Aren't Shameful, So Why Does Period-Shaming Still Exist?

Nearly every woman on the planet menstruates. But for some reason, our evolved species is still finding this natural flow to be something that needs to be whispered about and kept under wraps. In 2015, some of us are even highly offended by the notion of a woman having her monthly visitor. menstrual bleeding cramps Thinx is a brand of underwear that is making it their mission to stop the period stigmas one pair of panties at a time. The brand recently pitched some creative ads to be placed in the New York Subway Stations, but were shut down due to their offensive content. Subway goers complained about having to see the word "period" displayed right in front of their eyes, and many did not like the 'suggestive' imagery in the ads. thinx ads new york subway This ad, for example, represents the all-to-real experience of menstrual cramps. But commuters found this adworthy of numerous complaints, as opposed to the multitudes of bikini clad women advertising weight loss pills that are prominent in the subway. “This is not a women’s issue. Don’t try to make it a women’s rights thing." stated Outfront Media, the company who squashed the ad campaign. But the thing is, it's very much a women's issue. You can't take away one of the most natural women's issues in the world and say it's not a women's issue. Just like how breastfeeding is taboo, but using female breasts to sell hamburgers, cars and body spray is not. This is a form of shaming; a process that women can not prevent. We are taught to hide our periods for fear of embarrassment, spend lots of money on feminine products to keep control of our inner workings, to wake up with crippling cramps and go to school/work/a meeting/the gym as if we're absolutely fine. I think it's time we end period-shaming, and stop being offended by something that literally half of the population experiences. What are your thoughts? Does period-shaming need to stop? How would you like to see the world start embracing menstruation? Source: Elite Daily Do you follow us on Instagram?
