Pizza Tops The List of Addictive Foods People Find Difficult to Put Down
Researchers at the University of Michigan, have done us all a favour and compiled a list of highly addictive foods that are near impossible to stop eating. Pizza junkies, chocolate lovers, potato chip devotees, this is not good news for you.
The researchers conducted two tests on 120 students to determine the role that processing, fat content and glycemic load plays in addictive foods. They used a version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (which measures addictive-like eating behaviours) and gave the students a list of 35 foods. Half of the list consisted of highly processed foods and the other half were considered unprocessed.
The participants were asked to identify foods they found to be 'problematic.' 92% of the students who participated expressed a desire to stop eating 'problematic' foods but felt unable to do so.
The authors of the study say, “Highly processed foods, or foods with added amounts of fat and/or refined carbohydrates, were most associated with addictive-like eating behaviors. Nine out of the ten foods at the top of the list were highly processed and high in both fat and refined carbohydrates. Soda (not diet) was the exception, which is highly processed and high in refined carbohydrates, but not fat.”
Curious about this list? Here it is, ranging from most to least addictive:
