Plus Size Women Fight Instagram's Ban Of The Word "Curvy"
Apparently folks on Instagram have been using #curvy to share more than body positive photos. In an attempt to curb the sexually explicit material posted under the hashtag, Instagram has banned it completely.
Plus size women and body positive activists have fired back with a hashtag of their own. Welcome to #curvee. Well, played ladies.
You can also find people sharing their images and inspiring quotes under different hashtags like #bringbackcurvy, #beautyhasnosize, #everybodyisbeautiful.
I don't know if I believe that Instagram is trying to perpetuate the ban of plus size women on Instagram but it is interesting that other explicit hashtags remain, like #hookers or #fetishes. This isn't the first time that Instagram has caught heck for its policing of the female body. The female nipple, obese woman and period blood have all been deleted in the past due to a violation of the company's terms of use. Hard to say what is really going on here.
All I know, you can't stop people on the internet. As the #curvee gains more steam, the body positive movement will be back to full force.
What do you think? Is this an erasure of plus size women or is this just a move Instagram has made to clean up their site?
