Pregnant with Twins and Pumping Iron: Fitness Model Causes Major Controversy

June 23, 2015 2 min read

Sophie Guidolin is an Australian fitness model who has caused quite a stir with Instagram shots of her lifting weights while pregnant with twin girls. In this pic, the mama-to-be is lifting a 66 pound weight, and dispelling "old wives tales" that women shouldn't do heavy lifting while expecting. She is 26 weeks along in the photo. While 26 year old Sophie works out under the guidance of her registered dietician and personal trainer hubby, her controversial post caused an uproar from critics. The concern comes from the common association with exercise and miscarriage. In actuality, exercise during pregnancy (when approved by a doctor) can benefit a woman's energy level and blood flow, as well as reduce her risk of certain complications. It does not have a direct link to the risk of miscarriage. Sophie states she is exercising far more gently than prior to her pregnancy, and is taking all necessary precautions to ensure a safe and healthy routine. While Sophie also attests to maintaining a nutrient-rich prenatal diet, the photo is still shocking and alarming to some viewers. "There were people saying I'm going to have a prolapse [gynecological hernia], but its no different to if I bent down to pick up a pencil, or the groceries. The pros of exercising during pregnancy definitely outweigh the cons. I really hope that pregnant women understand the benefits of exercising and a healthy lifestyle while pregnant." Sophie explained to The Daily Mail Australia. Among the criticism, there has been an outpour of support from her Instagram followers and fans. What do you think of this weightlifting mama?
