Realistic Proportions Barbie
The article about average Barbie is by no means new, but I recently stumbled across it again and thought to myself “why hasn’t this become a thing yet?” and decided to share. THEN I saw a link to a much more recent post and it HAS become a thing!!
Artist Nikolay Lamm, who first created the Barbie with realistic proportions, has come out with Lammily, the prototype of a Barbie doll alternative. Lammily is shorter, wider, has brown hair, minimal make-up, and moveable elbows, wrists, knees, and feet.
Using measurements from the CDC, Lamm took the measurements of an average 19-year-old American girl. He’s joined forces with Roger Rambeau, former executive of Mattel, and through crowdsourcing has managed to raise $500,000 for the first round of production.
I grew up playing with Barbies, and my self-confidence is fairly ok, I’m sure there are lots of people that would say Barbie is just a doll, not a role model, and how well would “Beer Belly Batman” sell? My only issue with that line of argument is that there is an obvious body-image problem sweeping the nation and I think that not only would “Realistic Proportions Barbie” be a self-esteem boost for young girls, it would probably sell exceedingly well.
