Research Says The Position You Sleep In Can Determine Your Dreams

We all have our own habits when it comes to sleep. Some like to be wrapped in blankets in the fetal position, others are fully splayed, completely naked and free. Socks on, socks off, TV on, TV off, warm, cold. The combinations and personal preferences are endless, really. You've likely not given it much thought before but the way you sleep could be impacting the way you dream. A 2012 study conducted by Calvin Kai-Ching Yu used 700 subjects and found that certain sleep positions were more susceptible to producing certain types of dreams. “Different sleep positions may create pressure on different parts of the body, and body feelings may be the sources of dream elements,” Yu explains. Subjects who were encouraged to sleep on their stomachs reported having intense and vivid sexual dreams. Yu goes on to explain that by switching positions you can change your dreams. But he cautions that messing with your sleep habits could detract from the overall quality of your sleep. Alice Martin, of Everyday Health, says that if you are used to sleeping on your side, your dreams are determined by the side you sleep on. Those who sleep on the right report more 'positive dreams' and those who sleep on the left have fewer nightmares. Do you sleep on your back? Not only does sleeping on your back lead to more snoring and an increased risk for back injury, it can also mean more frequent nightmares. Yu acknowledges that far more research is needed as there are many factors that effect your sleep habits and your dream patterns. But, this shouldn't stop you from testing the research yourself.
