Shakeology, It's Not Me, It's You: An Honest Review

I have a confession. Not too long ago, I decided to try a Beachbody program.  I love free DailyHIIT and Bodyrock workouts, so why would I pay for a DVD??  I was not consistently working out, and thought bringing a DVD to do during my lunch break would help.   I ordered a "Challenge Pack," which is a DVD set and a 30-supply of Shakeology.

Have you heard of Shakeology?  If you have done a Beachbody workout program (P90X, Insanity, Focus T25), you have probably seen ads for it.  Beachbody calls it a nutrient-dense meal replacement drink .  Have it once a day for 30 days, and they say you will be healthier.  To me, that sounded like a pretty sketchy claim, which is backed up by an equally sketchy study.  I decided to try it anyway.  The idea of drinking a nutrient packed breakfast  while driving to work was very appealing, especially since it comes in chocolate.

In one move, I went against two of my beliefs:

1- You don't need to pay for fitness.

2- Real food is always a better choice than protein powders or meal replacement shakes.

I did the program, and I drank one shake per day.  The workout program was tough, but I greatly prefer Daily HIIT and Bodyrock workouts.  I admit that having a DVD ready to go is easier than looking for a workout sometimes.   However, a real time challenge like the one I just finished is just as convenient.

I eat clean and I know my body.  The only thing I changed during that time was that I started having a shake for breakfast instead of oatmeal and an egg, or yogurt, nuts, and fruit.   The shakes made me feel terrible.  Within the first 2 days, I had stomach discomfort.  I was bloated.  When I jumped rope, it felt like rocks were in my abdomen.  I had digestion issues.  None of that was normal for me.  However, Beachbody claims you have to drink Shakeology for 30 days to see how it works for you, so I stupidly hung in there.  I even ordered a second 30-day supply.   A few days into that, I acknowledged that I had consistently felt like crap since drinking Shakeology.  My stomach was not improving, and my sugar craving were WORSE than usual!  I can't fully blame the drink, but Beachbody claims that Shakeology reduces cravings; my sugar cravings increased.

At the time, I couldn't find information on Shakeology's website to give insight about my stomach pain, so I turned to Google.  It turns out I'm not the only person to experience digestion issues while drinking it.  In fact, the FAQ section on the Shakeology page now addresses digestive problems (gas, bloat, constipation, & diarrhea).  Beachbody suggests reducing the daily serving to 1/2 scoop, and to work up to a full serving.   They say that the side effects could be partly due to the body eliminating toxins and rebuilding healthy microflora.  I tried the half-scoop suggestion, and it did not help me.

I returned the second order for a full refund. With a week, I felt normal again.  My stomach stopped feeling like someone had pumped it full of air.  I could jump rope without feeling like I was smuggling goods in my abdomen.  My digestion issues vanished.  I stopped craving sweets as much. There are many people who claim Shakeology is the best thing that they've ever had, but that definitely was not true for me.  In the end, I am back to eating real food and doing Daily HIIT and Bodyrock workouts. The Catching Fire Guide is full of nutrition and weight loss suggestions that use REAL food - not powder.

So… I drank shakeology for many years, switched to the vegan version because the regular one bothered my stomach. I decided to stop taking it this year because I’m over drinking shakes every day. My stomach has been a mess ever since. Horrible gas and bloating. So painful. I’m not trying to figure out how to get my stomach back to normal health after quitting shakeology. If anyone has tips for supplements that may help please let me know!

I usually don’t react to shakeolgy yet I been doing the shakes a few days and feel like horrible I still have a few weeks worth I’ll give it a little bit to see if it improves I’m thinking just sticking to real food

Hi Jessica. I know this article is 6 years old but I just recently started drinking Shakeology and by the second day I was already having issues. I developed a headache and I had the worst gas and bloating. By the third day I was done. I couldn’t take anymore. I had to stop drinking it for 4 days. I had been drinking the vegan chocolate flavor. My coach decided to ship me the vegan vanilla and told me to do half a scoop. Today I tried it and I got the headache again but not as bad and I can tell my gut is messed up and bloated. I have been eating healthy and working out way before I started Shakeology thinking it would just give me more nutrients but it’s only made me feel worse. I’m glad I’m not the only one who has this problem. I’m just going to make my own healthy shake that I know won’t bloat me up. I know what my body needs.
