Shut Up About Starbucks Cups & Speak Up About Bloomingdale's Rape Ad

Bloomingdale's is stirring up some serious controversy with their latest ad campaign for the holiday season. It looks like Starbucks isn't the only one offending people in the thousands. The high end clothing retailer has come up with a new tagline that apparently everyone in the marketing department deemed totally fine, "Spike your friend's eggnog when they are not looking." bloomingdales rape ad controversy This highly inappropriate and downright a**hole-y tagline was not just a minor slip-up. It was thought up, printed up, had typography set for it... How do these things happen? “In reflection of recent feedback, the copy we used in our recent catalog was inappropriate and in poor taste,” a spokesperson for the company stated after an outcry from the public.  “Bloomingdale’s sincerely apologizes for this error in judgment.” This "error in judgement" exemplifies the fact that we live in a rape culture where spiking a woman's drink when she's unaware is socially acceptable enough to be used to sell products. The casual, almost debonair vibe of the ad poorly disguises the offensive message as charming. The question is: did Bloomingdale's creative executives completely miss the obvious encouragement of rape culture or did they just simply not care? What are your thoughts on this incident?
