As we all know, calling out and devaluing women for their sexual behaviour is ridiculous misogynistic bullcrap, but Playboy has an argument that may encourage more people to stop the hate. Playboy had a surprisingly scientific article (I know, they have articles?) about why ending slut-shaming will ultimately lead to more people getting laid.
There is a common double standard that men are allowed to sleep around, but women are sluts if they are similarly promiscuous. It’s this negative stigma around sexually active women which makes women as a whole less likely to seek out sexual encounters.
There are undoubtedly certain biological gender differences when it comes to sexual activity, but nurture and not just nature play a part in promiscuity preferences. In a study of 24,000 students from across America, 28% of men said they would lose respect for a woman who “hooked up a lot” but wouldn’t if it was a man. In general, studies show that people disapprove of a sexually promiscuous woman more so than a man.
Luckily that trend is changing, as social and economic conditions change, more people have the freedom of sexual expression, and today’s generation have less of a gender divide than the one before it, so we can only hope this pattern will continue.
Ultimately, the article points out that if we create an environment where women feel comfortable enough to engage in sexual activity as freely as they choose, and when paired with the right partners, then women will want casual sex just as much as guys statistically do.
