How Social Media Has Changed The Way We Break-Up

Breaking up has never been an easy situation. In the days before social media ruled, you may have only encountered your ex in an awkward coffee shop run in or in line at the video rental shop. (Remember those?) Nowadays the "end" of a relationship does not mean your ties are cut completely. If you're deeply invested in the relationship, chances are you follow a lot of their friends and family on social media. You have Pinterest boards you shared with their sister, inside jokes tweeted back and forth with their friends and tagged photos of you and your ex on a double date. Your social media accounts are a digitally documented record of all of your memories of each other. And now your Timehop app keeps alerting you that one this day, 2 years ago, you went on your first road trip together. So now comes the slow dismantling of the public version of your relationship. You put up a profile picture of just you, change your status, untag yourself. But you can't get away from your ex. It's too easy to creep them, even if they are no longer your friend. And you can find them sneakily through a mutual friend's photos anyways. You can now watch from your screen as they find a new job, apartment, girlfriend. The important thing to remember is that, while the loss of a relationship can be painful, it does not define you. It's going to hurt. But it will not hurt forever. A break-up is a great time to focus on yourself. Meditate, take a trip, try something new! Yes, the world has changed and technology may make it seem more difficult to move on, but in the end you will find a way. What is the best advice you've ever received about breaking up?
