Spirulina, So good for You!

I discovered Spirulina a couple years ago when I got the flu my friend told me to take it. I had never heard about spirulina, but once I did some research on it I wondered why everyone wasn’t taking it on a daily basis to be healthy. What is spirulina? It is a nutrient rich blue-green algae, cultivated worldwide and used as a dietary supplement and as a whole food. Although using spirulina dates back to the 9th century, spirulina wasn’t used in commercial production until the 1970's. Today spirulina is being used around the world to treat illness and is being discussed as a sustainable source of food to end world hunger. What are the health benefits of spirulina?
  • Boosts your immune system.
Spirulina helps your immune system, and it also helps you from suffering from allergies. Spirulina has been shown to help inactivate the human immunodeficiency virus associated with HIV and AIDS.
  • Balances Blood Pressure
The Department of Biochemistry in Mexico found 4.5 grams of spirulina taken daily was shown to regulate blood pressure.
  • Normalizes Cholesterol
According to a study done with elderly males and females ages 60-87, those given 8 grams of spirulina daily for 16 weeks showed lower cholesterol levels than those who had taken the placebo.
  • Lowers Stroke and Cancer Risk
One study done at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Technology in India found promising effects of spirulina preventing strokes. A study done is China used selenium-infused spirulina which inhibited the growth of breast cancer cells. Spirulina a great source of Protein Spirulina also is great for vegetarians as it has more protein than red meat! Spirulina is 65-71% complete protein compared to beef, which is only 26%.  All these benefits from one supplement, wow its kind of mind blowing how nature has all the answers. I currently take spirulina daily and encourage others to do the same.
