A lot of people treat the elliptical machine like the Holy Grail of cardio machines. After all, it's supposed to work your upper body along with your cardio, right? Isn't it better than running or cycling? According to one Los Angeles trainer , the elliptical machine is the WORST one to use for fat burning. Why is this? Well, it seems that most people rely on momentum to keep them going. The momentum of their arms and legs moving makes the workout easier, and the low resistance does very little to burn fat. It does get your heart pumping and your body warm, but it's NOT the most effective cardio exercise for fat loss. The only way to get an effective elliptical workout is to constantly change the intensity and resistance, but many people do a fairly steady, mindless workout on the elliptical. Use it to warm up or reduce muscle soreness, but consider using another machine for your primary cardio workout!
