Superfood Hot Chocolate Recipe

When it’s cold outside, the last thing that I crave is a smoothie. I want something that will warm me from the inside out! But then we are missing out on our daily dose of superfoods and nutrients that usually come with our smoothie… right?! Well, no! You can get all the benefits of a smoothie but make a hot version for the colder weather. Here are some suggestions for making your own Superfood Hot Chocolate: Dandelion Root or Chaga Tea: Use this as your base instead of just adding water, may as well get an extra layer of benefits in there. You can use any flavored tea that you like, chai would also be a great option. Coconut Milk: the thick stuff- use a tablespoon or so to make it nice and creamy. Coconut Oil: Unlike other fats, medium chain fatty acids from coconut oil are easier to digest, not readily stored as fat and instead are quickly converted to energy. Look for virgin, organic coconut oil. Ghee: Buy or make your own, its so easy! Look for grass-fed or organic. Chia Seeds: These nutritional powerhouses not only add a juicy omega-3’s and protein but they also help to thicken it up. Adding them also helps to keep you fuller longer after drinking it! Raw Cacao Powder: Look for raw, organic and sustainably sourced cacao. Maca: Well known for it ability to boost energy, endurance and stamina, the Peruvian root, Maca has been used for centuries as a tonic for sexual function and hormone balancing. It is rich in vitamin B vitamins, C, and E. It provides plenty of calcium, zinc, iron, magnesium, phosphorous and amino acids. Sea Salt: A necessary addition. Not only does it balance the flavours out but its also supports the adrenal glands. Skip the iodized table salt and opt for pink Himalayan or celtic sea salts! Sweetner: Raw honey is always a great option but you could also use maple syrup or stevia!   Superfood Hot Chocolate-Basic Recipe: 1 tbsp chia seeds ½ tsp maca powder ½-1 tsp raw cacao powder 1 tbsp virgin coconut oil or grass-fed ghee pinch of good quality sea salt Sweetener of choice 2 cups of hot tea of choice Fun additions: 1 tbsp raw almond butter ½ a banana (really thickens it up) 1 scoop of chocolate or vanilla protein powder Preparation: Place all ingredients in a High-powered blender like a Vitamix or NutriBullet and blend until perfectly frothy and foamy!
