Janine Shepard, Australian pilot, author, and former cross-country skier, had once dreamed of winning an Olympic medal. Those dreams were crushed when she was hit by a truck during a training bike ride. Enduring massive injuries and being told that she may never walk again, Janine shares the story of her recovery, and her realization that if she couldn’t walk she would learn to fly. Her story is incredibly touching, and her message is universal: You are not your body. Janine is an amazing example of the human spirit overcoming extreme adversity. At the end of her talk, she quotes Lao Tzu: “When you let go of what you are, you become what you might be”, which perfectly illustrates the second message that she has; when you give up old dreams, new ones will take its place. Her amazing courage and spirit, and oftentimes humour, will leave you tearing up quite a few times throughout the talk.
