The 'Designer Vagina' Surgery That's On the Rise

There are numerous surgeries out there to alter your appearance to give you the look you've always wanted. A smaller nose, bigger breasts and a flatter tummy are all popular surgeries, however there are some that have come to light that are just out-of-the-box bizarre, and nonetheless, on the rise. Girls at the tender age of 16 are getting it, and even women in their 70s are undergoing the cosmetic surgery, too. It's been recorded by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) that there has been a 49 percent rise in just one year, from 2013 to 2014, of this surgery which involves tissue remove and restructuring. Labiaplasty is a surgery performed on the lips surround the vagina, in which the labia is made smaller, or to create a more symmetrical look, while vaginoplasty is a procedure that works to tighten up the vagina due to aging and childbirth. Dr Jennifer Walden, who is an aesthetic plastic surgeon and spokeswoman for the ASAPS, based in Austin, Texas, explained that labiaplasty is "one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in women." The procedure has been on the rise, she notes. "It is one of the fastest rising procedures, in terms of popularity. It can prove life-changing for so many patients." Dr Walden typically performs two to three of these operations a week. "Over the last three to four years, I have seen a large rise in procedures for feminine issues," she said. She believes that such trends as the removal of pubic hair as well as the exposure to porn are what cause women to continuously seek ways to improve their vaginal region. "There has been a rise in women going bare, down there, having Brazilian waxes and laser hair removal. It has become fashionable and as a result women have, all of a sudden, started to see things they may not have taken notice of before." The vagina surgery that is on the rise. The rise of this surgery isn't always so vain, however. "The majority of consultations I perform are on women who do have enlarged labia. This is not a made up problem. It can have serious consequences." An enlarged labia can be detrimental to a woman's health, affecting their hygiene, causing discomfort during sex and making tight clothing uncomfortable. "Some women have a real issue with contouring when wearing tight jeans and yoga pants," Dr Walden said. "They want to look and appear sleeker in that area. An enlarged labia can have a real impact on a woman's sex life. In mechanical terms the labia can be tugged on constantly, which can cause repeated pressure during sex, which leads to severe discomfort." Dr Walden says she has seen girls as young as 16 and women as old as 75 for this surgery. "But, typically I would say most women seek the procedure after childbirth, so it is normally women in their 20s and 30s that come to see me about the surgeries."
