A study carried out by eBay.co.uk reveals that the sale of 'man-bags' or 'murses' are on the rise. In fact, sales have skyrocketed 143% in three months.
Only 20% of men in the UK seem to think there is negative stigma surrounding the man-bag. It seems practically wins out. The rucksack seems to be a favourite among men, including celebrity Ryan Gosling. The holdall is also popular as well as the messenger bag.
Most men tend to use their bags to tote their work documents, laptops, tablets, phones, keys, wallets and MP3 players.
The trend has not reached these heights in North America, but the sale of man-bags has increased slightly.
The man-purse is by no means a modern phenomena. The first man-bag dates back to over 5000 years ago. However, during the 18th and 19th centuries, pockets began being incorporated into men's pants and the purses were slowly phased out. Wallets still allowed men to carry their coin and paper currency. Pockets were designed to be heavy, but loose to allow room for the wallets. The number of pockets became more numerous to allow men to carry other items, including pipes, pocketknives and pocket watches.
However, with the advent of tighter fitting pants in the 1970's came the need for the revival of the man-bag, and in a world riddled with skinny jeans, it seems the man-bag is here to stay.
