The Unsung Powerhouses
Did you know?
Your jaw muscles (masseter) can close your incisor teeth with a force as great as 55 pounds and your molars with a force as great as 200 pounds. This makes your chomper the strongest muscle in your body based on its weight.
Other powerful muscles include the external muscles in your eye (a busy group - in an hour of reading, the eyes make almost 10,000 coordinated adjustments), the gluteus maximus (your butt is also the largest muscle in your body), your heart (the hardest working muscle - it pumps at least 2,500 gallons of blood every day), the uterus (contracts during labour to push out a baby - no easy feat), the soleus (muscle that pulls with the greatest force - found below the calf muscle), and the tongue (an agile and constant worker, even when you sleep your tongue works to constantly push saliva down your throat.)
