This Is Exactly Why You Should Never Try Your Own Tattoo Removal

Sometimes, tattoos come with regrets. Unfortunately, for 23-year-old Jess Hardy, that regret has been compounded. Hardy had her boyfriend's name tattooed onto her arm. When the relationship fell apart, she naturally no longer wanted his name on her body. After looking into laser removal, and being turned off by the price, Hardy bought a $23 peel treatment online. This treatment left Hardy with nasty burns and a hole in her arm! tattoo-image-1 She told the BBC that "It felt like someone had poured something flammable on my arm, lit it, and then poured a kettle on it." The worst part, the tattoo isn't even gone! Hardy's skin is discoloured at the application site and the ink is still visible. tattoo-image-2 Marie Leger, M.D. a dermatologist and assistant professor of dermatology at NYU, says that although there are lots of products out there that promise to remove your tattoo safely and naturally at home, they are not a good idea. “I’ve had patients before who try to do this,” she says. “You have to be really careful. A lot of these techniques can lead to scarring and burns.” Acid peels, forget them. Dermatologist Cynthia Bailey, M.D., a diplomat of the American Board of Dermatology and president and CEO of Advanced Skin Care and Dermatology Inc., explains that acid peels burn the skin from the top down. In a tattoo, the ink is placed on the second living layer of skin called the dermis. The acid can only reach the tattoo once it has burned through the first living layer, the epidermis. “Burning off the epidermis is a guarantee for a scar,” says Bailey. Both Bailey and Leger say the only safe way to remove tattoos is through laser treatment applied by a professional. Sure, it will cost you more than $23 to have a tattoo laser removed but at least you won't have a hole in your arm... Do you have a tattoo removal horror story? Share with us.
