THIS Is The Secret To Communicating Well With Your Partner

Looking to establish a more open dialogue with your partner? Perhaps you want your partner to feel more comfortable speaking about their past with you, or expressing their emotions. There is one secret to making communication easier. Couples who experience a close bond and successful communication practice this.  It is known as 'active listening' couple active listening "[They] listen to what their partner says, rather than get defensive without understanding the partner’s point of view or where they’re coming from." says couples therapist Janet Zinn. "Active listeners respond to what is said." Being an active listener takes practice. Doing specific exercises help you learn to listen more effectively and understand your partner. The first exercise is to reflect back on your partner what you heard them say to you. Sometimes we filter what someone said with our own perception, but the key is fully listen to everything that is being said and they in which is it meant to be heard. Do not yell or speak over each other, but give each other adequate time to have a say and come a conclusion after each of you have stated their case. "It may be that one partner is more blaming, and then that can be softened and the partner can work on being open, so that it doesn’t elicit defensiveness. Finding out why we get defensive and bringing understanding and compassion to that allows us to be less defensive, and moves us towards active listening." adds Janet.
